[EN] EXCLUSIVE: BULGARIAN 'MIGRANT HUNTER' LEADS VIGILANTE PATROLS IN ARMOURED VEHIVLES TO ROUND UP AND TERRORISE REFUGEES ALONG THE TURKISH BORDER... AND BOASTS 'IT'S A SPORT'

  • Dinko Valev's units use military vehicles and dogs to hunt asylum seekers
  • He hands illegal migrants over to the police 'because they are all jihadists'
  • Wants Bulgarian state to fund operation and pay for every captured refugee
  • Human rights group accuse Valev of terrorising migrants with death threats

Dinko Valev, 29, has managed to acquire two armoured vehicles to travel through rough territory around the city of Yambol near the border with Turkey.
He says the reaction has been so positive among the population that he is now trying to recruit more people to expand his vigilante operation.
And he even wants the Bulgarian government to fund the operation and pay for every captured refugee.
He regards every illegal migrant as a jihadist and dismissed claims he was terrorising his captives.
He said: 'I would describe it as simply a sporting activity. You can't describe sportsmen as violent.'

(Brussels) – The European Union deal with Turkey is a flawed and potentially dangerous policy response to refugee flows across the Aegean Sea. EU and Turkish leaders will meet in Brussels on March 7, 2016, to discuss implementation of a joint action plan that the EU hopes will limit migration and refugee flows from Turkey to Greece.
Human Rights Watch issued a question-and-answer document today, including details about why Turkey should not be considered a safe country of asylum.
“EU leaders are in a panic to stop refugee flows before spring, and they seem willing to throw human rights overboard in the process,” said Judith Sunderland, acting deputy director for the Europe and Central Asia division of Human Rights Watch. “It is naked self-interest and wishful thinking to say Turkey is a safe country of asylum – it is not, and this deal could cause much more harm than good.”
The EU and Turkey signed the controversial deal in November 2015. The EU pledged €3 billion and political concessions to Turkey, in exchange for stepped up efforts to curb migration and refugee flows to Europe. The EU is eager for Turkey to crack down on boat departures from its coastline; an average of 2,500 people have made the crossing every day since the deal was struck. The €3 billion should be used to improve access to health care, education, and other basic services for more than 2 million Syrian refugees already in Turkey.
Turkey does not meet the two most basic conditions for a safe country of asylum, Human Rights Watch said. It does not provide effective protection for refugees and has repeatedly pushed asylum seekers back to Syria. Turkey has ratified the 1951 Refugee Convention, but is the only country in the world to apply a geographical limitation so that only Europeans can get refugee status there

[EN] RING-FENCING GREECE WILL OPEN THE GATE TO EUROPE'S NATIONALIST NIGHTMARE

theres-no-bordersA coalition of the inhumane is rising in Europe. A group of political leaders have been meeting this week in Vienna to coordinate how to seal the western Balkan refugee passage. The Western Balkan countries involved don’t want to risk hosting thousands of stranded people in their poor societies. They expect that by intentionally causing a humanitarian disaster in Greece they are going to stop the misery of the world getting in their backyard.

Meanwhile the four Visegrád countries (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia) who have not been not invited to join these discussions, are also at the forefront of this ideological campaign to seal the Balkan route. Their motivation is based on an Islamophobic narrative, as advocated by Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán, a self-declared enemy of liberal democracy and consolidator of a Christian front against the Islamisation of Europe.

[EN] EU MIGRATION CRISIS UPDATE - FEBRUARY 2016

MEDECINS SANS FRONTIERES

Every year, thousands of people fleeing violence, insecurity, and persecution at home attempt a treacherous journey via North Africa and across the Mediterranean to reach Europe. And every year, countless lives are lost on these journeys.

Refugees and migrants arrive at the transit camp in Idomeni, Greece.
In 2015, European policies led to a dramatic worsening the refugee crisis

2015 will be remembered as the year in which Europe catastrophically failed in its responsibility to respond to the urgent need for assistance and protection of over a million men, women and children.  Not only did the European Union and European governments collectively fail to address the urgent humanitarian and medical needs of refugees and migrants arriving at external and internal EU borders, but their policies and actions actively contributed to the worsening of the so-called “refugee crisis” and the health and well being of those who fled.
Europe’s restrictive policies put some of the world’s most vulnerable people in more danger, causing more suffering, as they risk it all to try to bring themselves, and their families, to safety. European countries (and transit countries) have the responsibility to ensure their policies guarantee the right to seek asylum and respect fundamental rights and human dignity.
People will continue to risk their lives at the hands of smugglers as long as there are no safe alternatives
There are very few safe channels that people can take to reach protection, safety and a better life. With Europe’s land borders sealed, people are forced into the hands of smugglers and into leaky, overcrowded boats on the Mediterranean and Aegean seas.
As of 20 February, 94,269 people had arrived in Greece from Turkey by sea this year; this brings the total number of arrivals to the Greek islands since 1 January 2015 to more than 950,000. The daily average of nearly 2,000 arrivals is nearly ten times the daily average of a year ago. The Aegean Sea has become the most deadly route for people trying to reach Greece from Turkey. To date, more than 400 people were reported death in the Mediterranean Sea.
Search and rescue is not a solution to the situation.
Safe and legal alternatives are, but resources must be sufficiently allocated to mitigate for more unnecessary loss of life

[EN] 'FENCES WILL STOP NO-ONE'

Another ONE MILLION migrants will head to Europe this year, says head of the EU border agency, who warns razor wire won't stop determined refugees

  • Fabrice Leggeri, Europe's border boss, says fences will not stop the influx
  • He added it would be a success if refugee numbers stabilised this year
  • But he also warned the Syrian war would result in another million migrants

By Allan Hall In Berlin and Corey Charlton for MailOnline

Europe's refugee crisis shows no signs of abating with the head of the EU border agency Frontex predicting a further one million migrants headed to the continent this year.

Fabrice Leggeri warned that walls and wire were no match for determined people and added; 'Fences will stop no-one.'

His prediction comes as new figures yesterday revealed more than 110,000 migrants have already reached the EU this year.

[EN] BORDER FENCES WILL NOT STOP MIGRANTS HEADING TO EUROPE: THINK-TANK

BY EMMA BATHA

LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Efforts by European countries to deter migrants with border fences, teargas and asset seizures will not stem the flow of people into the continent, and European leaders should make their journeys safer, a think-tank said on Wednesday.
The Overseas Development Insitute (ODI) said Europe must act now to reduce migrant deaths in the Mediterranean, where nearly 4,000 people died last year trying to reach Greece and Italy, and more than 400 have died so far this year.
European governments could open consular outposts in countries like Turkey and Libya which could grant humanitarian visas to people with a plausible asylum claim, the think-tank said.
Allowing people to fly directly to Europe would be safer and cheaper than for them to pay people smugglers, and would help cripple the smuggling networks that feed off the migrant crisis, the London-based ODI said.
More than 1.1 million people fleeing poverty, war and repression in the Middle East, Asia and Africa reached Europe's shores last year, prompting many European leaders to take steps to put people off traveling.
But the ODI said new research showed such attempts either fail to alter people's thinking or merely divert flows to neighboring states.
Researchers interviewed 52 migrants from Syria, Eritrea and Senegal who had recently arrived in Germany, Britain and Spain. Their journeys had cost an average 2,680 pounds ($3,880) each.
More than one third had been victims of extortion, and almost half the Eritreans had been kidnapped for ransom during their journey.

[EN] PROTESTS AT GREEK BORDER AFTER MORE MIGRANTS DROWN IN AEGEAN

ALEXANDROUPOLIS, Greece (AP) — A day after 46 migrants drowned in a choppy Aegean Sea, protesters demonstrated Saturday at a Greek border town to demand that Greece ease transit restrictions at its heavily militarized border with Turkey.
Most of the 200-kilometer (124-mile) land border between Greece and Turkey is separated by the Evros River — known as the Meric River in Turkey. But a 12.5-kilometer (nearly 8-mile) stretch of land separating the two countries was previously lined with minefields and is now separated by a fence.
The area is guarded with police and military patrols on land and on the river, a network of cameras and a few officers from the European border protection agency, Frontex.

Wearing life vests and foil blankets, the demonstrators chanted "This fence means refugees drown!" as they kicked off two days of protests in the area. They are planning a march Sunday toward the border fence.
"It's vital that the fence is removed. It's because of the fence that refugee families are forced to travel across the Aegean, and people are drowning on a daily basis," said protester Michalis Sopatzoglou, who travelled from the Greek island of Lesbos to join Saturday's rally.
At least 60 people have died in Greek waters this month while trying to cross from Turkey to the Greek islands in poor weather, using unseaworthy boats provided by Turkish smuggling gangs.
High winds on Saturday disrupted plans by Greek Coast Guard divers to search for bodies off the island of Kalymnos, where most of the people in Friday's accidents died.
Marie Elisabeth Ingres, Greek mission chief for the charity Doctors Without Borders, or MSF, said creating a "safe point of passage" at the Greek-Turkish border should be a priority.
"Since the beginning of this crisis, MSF has been calling for legal and safe reception to be made available at the land border between Turkey and Greece," she told The Associated Press. "At present ... people are effectively blocked from crossing it and have no other option but to turn to illegal means to reach the continent, risking their lives and often the lives of their families at sea."
