As today marks three years since the implementation of the EU-Turkey Joint Statement, the Greek Council for Refugees (GCR) and CEAR (Comision Española de Ayuda al Refugiado-Spanish Commission for Refugees) with the support of the Municipality of Madrid, publish together a video on refugee pushbacks in the Evros region.
The practice of pushbacks in the Evros region, the Greek-Turkish northeastern border, has been reported on many occasions. But it keeps happening today to an even greater degree, especially after the implementation of the “EU-Turkey deal”, a deal trapping people on the Aegean islands since March 20, 2016.
The Evros route proves to be extremely dangerous, with 39 recorded deaths in 2018 and at least 4 this year, so far.
Despite the continuous and repeated reports by the Greek Council for Refugees and other organizations on a great number of pushbacks incidents, the Greek government continues to remain indifferent and does not react.
Τhe present video is yet another testimony aiming at drawing attention and raising further awareness on such a crucial human rights issue.
