Mathias Fiedler

[EN] MIGRANTS AT TURKEY-GREECE BORDER DEMAND PASSAGE TO EUROPE

A migrant holds up a child as he and others react with Turkish security members as they try to walk down a highway towards Turkey’s western border with Greece and Bulgaria, near Edirne, Turkey, Saturday, September 19, 2015. AP/BTA -
Edirne, Turkey | AFP |
Tensions rose Saturday in the northwestern Turkish city of Edirne, where around 2,000 migrants have been blocked by police from reaching the nearby border with Greece for nearly a week.
The migrants have been facing off with police since Tuesday, when local authorities sealed off the main road from the east to groups of mostly Syrian refugees arriving from other parts of Turkey.
The standoff has been devoid of the violence that has characterised confrontations between migrants and police in some parts of Europe but tensions edged higher on Saturday afternoon, with riot police using batons to disperse a group of around 300 people who tried to force their way past police lines.
The demonstrating migrants were from a group that has been refusing to budge from the road outside Edirne.
Around 1,000 migrants, many of them children, spent another night in makeshift camps by the roadside, around 10 kilometres (six miles) from the Greek border and 20 km from the border with Bulgaria.
Hundreds more accepted the city's offer of a tent, showers and hot meal in a stadium used for traditional Turkish oil wrestling competitions.
The migrants are demanding to be allowed to cross into Greece by land instead of risking their lives in overcrowded migrant boats in the Aegean Sea.
"Open the doors," the group of migrants that tried to storm police barricades chanted.
One refugee hurled excrement at the officers, an AFP photographer witnessed.
The atmosphere of frustration contrasted with the mood of jubilation that prevailed Friday when the police briefly opened the road, allowing the refugees to march a few kilometres closer to their destination.
Edirne, a city of around 170,000, has become a new rallying point for migrants trying to reach Europe.
Encouraged by the #Crossingnomore social media campaign, which calls for migrants to be allowed to travel safely overland, up to 1,000 refugees flocked to Edirne earlier this week.
Many of the refugees have been living in Turkey for months, sometimes years, after fleeing the bloody civil war in Syria across the two countries' 900-kilometre border.
Turkey has taken in an estimated 2.2 million Syrians, around 260,000 of whom live in refugee camps, according to official figures.
Authorities in Edirne have threatened to return the refugees amassed in the city to the camps.

[EN] OPEN THE BORDER TO WELCOME THE REFUGEES FROM TURKEY TO GREECE THROUGH EVROS

KEERFA MOVEMENT UNITED AGAINST RACISM AND FASCIST THREAT
Open the border to welcome the refugees  from Turkey to Greece through Evros

A human caravan is on its way towards the land border with Turkey in Evros to avoid the endless drowning in the Aegean sea. Over a thousand refugees began a long march from Izmir to reach the Evros river and avoid so to have the fate of the shipwrecked in the Aegean sea. They are welcome! Now both the Greek and the Turkish authorities have to support them and not to send riot police to stop them at the border. The refugees demand to pass with the approval of the authorities and then be directed to other European countries through safe passages.Let the twenty young refugees drowned in Pharmakonisi and four new small dead "Aylans" be the last on the altar of racist Fortress Europe, closed borders and fences.
The fence in Evros was a racist gift of Greek governments in closing EU borders that pushed thousands of refugees into the hands of traffickers and their floating coffins bringing the death by drowning of thousands of refugees. Unfortunately the government of SYRIZA did not demolished the fence. Unfortunately the last year’s flood did not destroyed the fence totally. We need to knock down now the fence because every meter of it means more women and children refugees drown, on the Aegean or on Evros, from more dangerous passages.

Τι περίεργο! Πριν από 92 χρόνια, από το ίδιο περίπου σημείο, πρόσφυγες από την Αδριανούπολη και το Κάραγατς παίρναν το δρόμο της προσφυγιάς. Το δικό τους ¨δρόμο της ελπίδας”. Δεν είχαν “φράχτες” να περάσουν αλλά και να είχαν τι είναι ένας φράχτης, ένα ποτάμι όταν έχεις να αντιμετωπίσεις ένα πόλεμο, μια καταστροφή και το φόβο για τη ζωή; Οι προσφυγικές τραγωδίες έχουν εποχή ή προορισμό;

[EN] FENCES ACROSS EUROPE: MAP SHOWS DESPERATE BID BY NATIONS TO STEM FLOW OF MIGRANTS

THIS startling map shows the lengths individual European countries are going to tackle the growing problem of immigration.

Fence map
Map showing the growing number of fences European countries are building to stop migrants
Each number on the graphic represents a fence either built or being constructed in order to shore up borders.
Hundreds if miles of barriers are in the pipeline as the influx of refugees into the continent reaches uncontrollable levels.
In recent years countries such as Bulgaria and Greece have attempted to stop migrants making it into the European Union from Turkey with the aid of giant fences.
But to highlight the difficulty in tackling the problem people have instead veered towards treacherous boat crossings to escape Middle East instability and war zones, as well as poverty across many parts of Africa.
The list:
  1. Ceuta and Melilla in north Africa
  2. Greece - Turkey
  3. Bulgaria - Turkey
  4. France - Britan
  5. Hungary - Serbia
  6. Ukraine - Russia
  7. Estonia - Russia
Hungary is currently stepping up its battle to stop migrants entering from neighbouring Serbia with plans for a 100 mile steel fence between the nations.
It claims over 150,000 refugees had arrived in the central European country this year, making their way from countries further south.
Many apply for asylum in Hungary and then leave for other Schengen countries.
Hungary's foreign minister Peter Szijjarto recently defended the structure saying: "Other countries have opted for the same solution. The EU countries seek a solution, but Hungary cannot afford to wait any longer."
In Africa, meanwhile, Morocco has built a 15-foot wall topped with razor wire on its border with Spanish enclave Melilla to halt waves off people trying to make it to Europe.

[EN] MAP: THE WALLS EUROPE IS BUILDING TO KEEP PEOPLE OUT

After the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, for a while it seemed like border fences and barriers were a thing of the past in Europe. Many on the continent hoped for a new era of integration and receptivity. It didn't happen. Instead, various pressures have led Europe to adopt wall-building projects that would make Donald Trump proud.
Right now, in Hungary, for example, the government is rushing to complete a 109-mile-long barbed wire border fence along its southern frontier with Serbia – a project made bitterly ironic by Hungary's 1989 decision to cut its border fence with Austria and help break the Iron Curtain. "We have only recently taken down walls in Europe," European Union spokeswoman Natasha Bertaud said when news of the fence spread in June. "We should not be putting them up."
The Hungarian government hopes this new fence will stem the flow of migrants and refugees traveling through Hungary on what has been referred to as the West Balkans route. In 2015, Hungary often serves as an entry point to the European Union and border control-free travel in the Schengen area for those crossing from Greece and the Balkans. In the immediate future, however, the fence may not have the desired effect. News of its construction has led refugees to race across the border into Hungary.

ΒΙΑΙΕΣ ΕΠΑΝΑΠΡΟΩΘΗΣΕΙΣ ΣΕ ΘΑΛΑΣΣΑ ΚΑΙ ΞΗΡΑ;

[EN] THE CHALLENGE OF MIGRATORY WAVES IN THE EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN: SHAPING A RESPONSE

The Arab Spring and its aftermath have provoked significant regional unrest from which emerged political regime changes in many countries of North Africa and the Middle East. In Syria and Libya, notably, unrest has led to devastating civil wars forcing a large part of their population to attempt to reach European grounds seeking refuge and better living conditions.

The European Union (EU) faces security and humanitarian challenges of unprecedented proportions due to the huge migratory wave across the central and eastern Mediterranean.
As Malta’s Prime Minister stated in April, “What is happening now is of epic proportions. If Europe, if the global community continues to turn a blind eye… we will all be judged in the same way that history has judged Europe when it turned a blind eye to the genocide of this century and last century.”

By Maria Kottari

Amid ongoing migrant arrivals, and considerations by the EU of more direct action, this article outlines the conditions of trafficking across the Mediterranean Sea and the attendant security and humanitarian implications for the EU.

The article focuses on the case of illegal migration towards Greek shores and the internal policy challenges the country faces given its ongoing economic crisis.

An assessment of FRONTEX’s maritime operations in the eastern Mediterranean is made, along with an analysis of Turkey’s role and the EU’s strategy in the areas of maritime and migration policy.

Overview

The commemoration of the tragic shipwreck of the Titanic some 103 years earlier took place on 16 April 2015.

A comparison made by Amnesty International shows that in 2014 migrant drownings in the Mediterranean made up more than the equivalent of two Titanics in terms of numbers of victims.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) some 3,400- 3,500 migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers bound for European shores lost their lives crossing the Mediterranean in 2014. This number is expected to rise in 2015. On 18 April 2015, 800 migrants drowned off the Libyan coast and a similar event took place in the beginning of the same month with 400 victims.

According to the Greek authorities, during the weekend of 18 and 19 April the Greek coastguard rescued 1,047 migrants at risk. Amnesty International reports that the escalating conflicts in Africa and the Middle East have “led to the largest refugee disaster since the Second World War.”

Amnesty estimates that 57 million people have been forced to flee worldwide in the last year, 6 million more than in 2012.

As shown in Figure 1 (below), for the last two years illegal border crossings via seaways have surpassed illegal land border crossings.
MIgratory Flows
Migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers from North Africa and the Middle East, mainly from Libya, Syria and Somalia, are crossing the Mediterranean in droves, aided by human traffickers, seeking better living conditions in EU territory.

Smugglers take full advantage of migrants’ desperation, trying to squeeze their last cent from them.

[EN] GATEWAY TO FREEDOM: MIGRANTS WALK THOUSANDS OF KM FOR HAVEN OF WESTERN EUROPE

MARK MACKINNON
SUBOTICA, SERBIA — The Globe and Mail

Migrants wait to board a train at Belgrade's main railway station bound for the border with Hungary on June 26, 2015. Hungary, which has seen 60,000 migrants crossing its border this year, said it would build a four-metre (13-foot) fence on its southern border with Serbia through which most migrants come into the country. (Andrej Isakovic / AFP/Getty Images)

GATEWAY TO FREEDOM
Their journey is gruelling. Tens of thousands of migrants travel routes as long as 7,000 km – on foot – exhausted and hungry and sometimes hunted by police, for havens in Western Europe and even Canada.

The Globe's Senior International Correspondent Mark MacKinnon spoke with several migrants along the Serbia-Hungary border in a place called The Jungle and reports on their harrowing overland journeys

Turn off the highway that winds among the farms near Serbia’s border with Hungary, walk into the shoulder-high weeds and you find them: hundreds of people, nearly all of them young men, clustered in makeshift camps. They’re hiding here – near the end of epic overland journeys – waiting for the right moment to continue their march north, toward what they hope are new and better lives in the European Union, or even Canada.

The migrants call this place The Jungle, which is more a reflection of the palpable edginess here than the density of the foliage. The Jungle is just 10 kilometres from the Hungarian border, and the gateway to the 26 countries in Europe where people can move across state lines without visas. The migrants have been dreaming about reaching the Schengen Area since they left their homes in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, and Iraq. Once they get across the Hungarian border, they feel closer to their goal. They talk of jobs in Germany, distant relatives in Sweden.

They walked most of the way here. “It took us six months,” said an exhausted-looking Sajid Khan, a wiry 18-year-old from Paktia province in eastern Afghanistan who made the almost 7,000-kilometre overland journey via Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, Greece and Macedonia with four other young men. Swollen and blistered feet poke out from their battered plastic sandals.

[EN] CRACKS IN SCHENGEN AS EUROPE BUILDS WALLS AGAINST MIGRANTS

From Hungary to Switzerland, fortifications are rising in the heart of Europe, where the once-heralded borderless zone is being diminished by the day.

Marie Maurisse, Maryline Baumard, Joëlle Stolz, Alain Salles
GENEVA — The Hungarian government announced plans earlier this month to build a 175-kilometer-long, four-meter-tall barrier along its border with Serbia. Ostensibly for protection, the project is yet another barricade built at the edges of the European Union, where the foundations of the borderless Schengen Area are weakening by the day.
Faced with the growing difficulty of leaving Greece by sea or air, migrants are choosing the long land route through the Balkan peninsula to reach the Schengen Area. As we near its 30th anniversary, tensions between member states are intensifying. In France, Austria and Switzerland, the specter of closing borders to keep out migrants is rearing its ugly head.
A quarter-century after the fall of the Iron Curtain, Hungary wants to rebuild a physical frontier with Serbia, this time to block access to the EU for thousands of northward-bound asylum seekers. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto declared that his government would launch technical and diplomatic preparations for the erection of a fence spanning the Serb-Hungarian border between the Hungarian cities of Mohacs and Szeged. (Late Monday, Hungary's parliament approved the plans for the giant barrier.)
The border is one of the last open land routes left in the peninsula, where refugees fleeing the Middle East wars and southern Europe's failing economies make their way through Greece, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Kosovo and Serbia to reach the holy grail of Schengen. EU border surveillance agency Frontex reported 43,360 illegal border crossings in the Balkans in 2014, up from 6,400 in 2012. An alarming 50,000 have been recorded since January of this year, half from Kosovo alone.
With a population of just under 10 million, Hungary is finding itself on another frontline of the EU's burgeoning humanitarian crisis. The number of asylum seekers in Hungary grew to over 50,000 last year, a figure already surpassed in the first half of 2015.
"The EU is still looking for a solution, but Hungary can't keep waiting anymore," says Szijjarto. He notes that Budapest isn't violating any international agreements and that there is ample precedent for similar barriers to guard against illegal immigration.
"I'm shocked and surprised," Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic says of the Hungarian plan. He resents Budapest's decision not to consult Belgrade before opting to build the fence. "We count on discussing these issues with our partners in the EU," Vukic says. Hungary was among the countries most hostile to the European Commission's proposal to distribute 40,000 refugees currently in Greece and Italy among the bloc's 28 members.
